Kursus Ipafu i 2018 - Course in Ipafu 2018

During a study trip to the Copperbelt in Zambia in 2018, we successfully conducted a short course for small-scale farmers in Ipafu near Chingola in Zambia. The course was based on recognized theoretical models adapted to the knowledge level of local farmers.
The idea for the course came across at dinner table at the home of one of the managers from the former management team at the Flame Tree Farm Training Centre. We had been invited to his home along with two members from the management team. They knew that there was a need for knowledge on how local farmers can improve their farms.
Hvordan hjalp kurset deltagerne? How did the course assist the participants?

There is a tendency for local farmers to copy each other if they observe that a neighbor is successful with a particular crop or livestock. There is nothing wrong with that. But it can result in the local market becoming crowded with specific products, which makes the price drop, even though it is usually a very lucrative market.
The course provided participants with tools to clarify which crops and lifestock they should aim for. These were divided into what ensured the family's self-sufficiency and which ensured a good stable income, as well as finally what kind of niche products which would provide a really good extra income.
